Whether you make these hand-stitched felt toys for gentle play or string them up to create a mobile, these are going to be a great hit with the whole family.
These sweet felt space toys are all about playful shapes and bright colours, with a slightly wonky handmade charm that makes them feel full of personality. Felt is a lovely fabric to work with, soft and tactile, perfect for small hands!
Create as many characters as you like, change the colours on the astronaut or personalize with initials. You could add other elements too, such as more windows on the rocket. The aliens can be as quirky as you like: bright greens, purples or blues, with mismatched eyes, funny antennae and hand-stitched grins. Slightly uneven shapes actually make them even better! Change any of the colours as you like and perhaps use up scraps of felt that you already have. These are fun toys to play with but would also make a charming mobile if you string them to an embroidery hoop. Natural felts tend to be softer that synthetic, making them more pleasant to both work and play with, so if you haven’t already got your felt, bear this in mind: I’ve used wool/viscose felt. Note that these are sewn entirely by hand – perfect if you like to have busy hands while watching TV or listening to the radio or an audio book.Make it your own!
- If making a mobile, choose the felt colours to coordinate with the room.
- I haven’t added anything that could be pulled off and eaten by small children, but if you are making these for a teenager – or yourself – you can add things like google eyes and sparkly trimmings.
- IThese are great little characters to hang from a bag, backpack or even a light pull, and they’re quick to sew. People are going to smile when they see them!
By the end of this project, you’ll have:
- Stitched some easy felt appliqué.
- Used up a few felt scraps creatively.
- Produced lovely hand-made gifts.
