With some leftover fabric, minimal sewing and a little hot glue, you can make these pretty everlasting roses to brighten your home and your heart.
These charming roses have raw edges that slightly fray to create a rustic, romantic decoration for your home. Cotton, linen or scraps from old clothes are perfect fabrics. I’ve used cotton gingham to give a shabby-chic, vintage look to my bouquet, but while making them I realized how beautiful they would look in all sorts of fabrics.
Twigs from my garden make stems – I like the way they aren’t quite straight, but you could use ¼in (5mm) dowelling if you prefer, or florist’s wire wrapped in fabric. If you’re using wire, your stems will be thinner than mine, so you need to make the hole in the centre of the sepal piece smaller, so that it hugs the wire a little closer. Twigs that curve slightly are quite sweet as they show the tops of the flower heads. I’ve used a paper-like interfacing (Vlieseline 205) to make the petals crisp. Fusible webbing such as Bondaweb or Heat n Bond would also work but would be a little more expensive. Vlieseline 205 is single-sided fusible, so I’ve used a basting spray as well. If you use fusible webbing, you won’t need basting spray or basting glue. If you don’t have a hot-glue gun you could use a strong wet glue, but this will take a while to dry.Make it your own!
- Use the rose heads without stems to make a wreath: simply hot glue the flowers and leaves onto a wire or twig wreath frame. You could add other flowers too, like the fabric tulips or daffodil heads we’ve made before.
- Choose a textured fabric like velvet or brocade to make your roses extra luxurious.
- Use two different fabrics in step 1 so the petals are a different colour on each side.
- Glue a few of the flowers and leaves to a plain headband.
- Use a safety pin to fix a single rose head and leaf to a jacket or hat to give it a lift.
By the end of this project, you’ll have:
- Made something pretty from fabric scraps.
- Made use of that glue gun that’s been in the bottom of your toolbox for a while.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine with a standard sewing foot
- Hot-glue gun (or you can use strong wet glue)
- Scissors
- Basting spray such as 505 or basting glue if using single-sided fusible interfacing
- Dressmaking pins
- Erasable fabric-marking pen: I’ve used heat erasable
- Scalloped or standard pinking shears
- Elastic band to secure the posy stems
- Optional: tweezers
Materials
- 34 x 4½in (86 x 11.5cm) of fabric for the flower:
- I used gingham fabric
- 14 x 3in (35.5 x 7.5cm) of fabric for the sepals and one leaf: I used a mottled green fabric
- 10in (25.5cm) twig: twigs can be cut to size when your bouquet is finished, as they may look better cut to different lengths
- Optional: 3 x 1¼in (7.5 x 3cm) piece of your flower fabric for the flower centre, to cover the top of the stick – or you could use a different coloured fabric for this
- 34 x 4in (86 x 10cm) of interfacing for the flower plus additional scraps for the sepals and leaf: I used Vlieseline 205
- 12in (30cm) of ½in (1.25cm) wide ribbon for a decorative bow
