Gingerbread House Doorstop | Beginner-Friendly | Video Tutorial

This fun gingerbread house doorstop makes a wonderfully seasonal addition to your home and is just as lovely used as a Christmas decoration.

Let your creativity flow as you dig through your fabric and haberdashery scraps to see what you can use on this fun project. I’ve listed what I used, but if you have other felt scraps and trimmings that would work, then use them.

Make it your own!
I’ve used the same appliqué designs on the front and back of my house, and matching designs on both sides, but you can have lots of fun making yours unique:

  1. Add Christmas trees and a little window to the back of the house, hearts to the sides, or create your own festive details.
  2. For an extra-special finish, add more hand embroidery. A stitched garland around the trees, tiny stars for snowflakes or little decorative stitches will give your gingerbread house even more character.
  3. Print out the templates at a smaller size and make a mini version!

Fusible craft fleece is quite firm and I’ve used it to help to give the house structure. For the outer roof I’ve used a softer fleece – Vlieseline H640 – but you could use 80/20 wadding instead, which works better if you’re going to stitch the shapes of roof tiles instead of using a patterned fabric (see steps 20–21).

Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine with a standard foot, plus a ¼in (5mm) foot if you have one
  • Heat-erasable pen to transfer the embroidery lines
  • Fabric glue stick
  • Wet fabric glue: I use Gutermann HT2
  • Pins and fabric clips
  • Optional: 3in (7.5cm) circle template if you’d like to stitch a tiled-roof effect

Materials

  • 44in x 13in (112cm x 33cm) of house fabric – I found a neutral cotton fabric for my house, but you can use any fabric(s) you like
  • 28in x 7in (71cm x 18cm) of outer roof fabric – I used a cotton fabric with pattern of candy-cane swags that resembles tiles, but you could use a plain fabric and stitch some outlines to suggest tiles if you like (see steps 20–21)
  • Scrap fabric to make a pouch for your chosen weights
  • 6in (15cm) square of yellow felt for the windows
  • 6in (15cm) square of white felt for the house doors
  • 6in (15cm) square of green felt for the trees
  • 6in (15cm) square of grey felt for the porch roofs, window boxes and flowerpots
  • 6in (15cm) square of red felt for the hearts
  • 39 x 13in (99 x 33cm) of fusible craft fleece for the main house
  • 14 x 7in (36 x 18cm) of fusible fleece such as Vlieseline H640 for the outer roof
  • 24in (61cm) of white ricrac braid
  • Two small buttons for doorknobs
  • 40in (102cm) of white pompom trim – or you could use braid or even leave it off
  • White and red embroidery threads
  • Toy filler
  • Bag of weights, such as pellets, sand or small pebbles
  • Get the kit!

To cut:

  • Your pattern pieces
  • Two 6in x 7in (15cm x 18cm) pieces of house fabric for the sides of the house
  • One 6in (15cm) square of house fabric for the base
  • Two 6in (15cm) squares of house fabric for the inner roof pieces
  • Four 7in (18cm) squares of outer-roof fabric
  • Two 6in (15cm) squares of scrap fabric for the weight pouch
