Here’s a storage idea that’s fun to make, easy to personalize and will lift your day whenever you look at it. It’s great for kids and adults alike.
This sweet wall hanging makes a pretty decoration, and the pockets on the front provide useful storage for small items. I’ve made mine in pastel nursery colours, but the owl would also look good made up in brights!
Secret supports
- A short length of dowelling in a channel on the back helps the owl to keep its shape.
- I’ve used Bosal In-R Form fusible stabilizer for structure, but craft fleece would also work well.
Make it your own!
- Refer to the steps to change the owl’s expression.
- Adjust the positioning of the pocket dividers so the pockets fit specific items.
- If making this for a nursery, add the child’s initials to the pocket fronts with appliqué, letter stamps or embroidery.
By the end of this project, you’ll have:
- Discovered an easy way of creating a set of pockets with a top border.
- Made something for the home that makes you smile.
- Found out how straightforward it is to use foam stabilizer.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine with a standard or ¼in (5mm) foot
- Hand-sewing needle
- Multipurpose glue
- Optional: basting spray
- Optional: fabric glue
Materials
- 18 x 11in (46 x 28cm) of fabric for the front: I used a blue patterned fabric
- 13 x 4in (33 x 10cm) strip of fabric for the pocket front
- 28 x 14in (71 x 35.5cm) of fabric for the backing, back casing, pocket lining, eyelids and heart
- 3 x 3in (7.5 x 7.5cm) of felt for the eyes and beak: I used beige
- 8 x 10in (20.5 x 25.5cm) of white felt for the chest, facial disc and irises
- Embroidery thread for the chest feathers and pupils: using multiple colours or a variegated thread adds to the fun effect
- 12 x 12in (30.5 x 30.5cm) square of single-sided fusible foam stabilizer, such as Bosal In-R-Form – or you can use craft fleece if you have some
- 8 x 8in (20 x 20cm) piece of wadding to pad the wings
- 8in (20cm) long dowelling rod, ¼in (5mm) wide
- 16in (40.5cm) length of coordinating twine or ribbon
- Small amount of toy filler for the heart
- Small button for the heart
