Quilt-Along: Bear's Paw Block of the Month 10 | 2026

This is a great confidence builder for your quilting skills as you’ll be making three traditional patchwork units and combining them into one stand-out block.

This Bear’s Paw block is a variation on the traditional Bear’s Paw block and although it looks complicated, when you break it down, it’s actually made up from a square within a square within a square block (known as a double square within a square) in the centre, surrounded by half square triangles, Flying Geese and plain squares (on the four corners).

It’s a great block for practising your piecing skills and you’ll learn how to create half square triangles and Flying Geese in multiple units.

By making this block, you'll have:

  1. Created a double square within a square.
  2. Learnt to sew eight-in-one-go half square triangles.
  3. Learnt to sew four-in-one-go Flying Geese.
  4. Worked with diagonal edges.

Finished untrimmed block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.
