Quilt-Along: EPP Butterfly Block of the Month 2 | 2026
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Develop your hand-sewing skills with this pretty butterfly block. Like Block 1, it has a popular 12in (30.5cm) finished size and can easily be used in other projects.
The EPP butterfly wings are stitched together over paper templates in the Dresden format first, before being appliquéd with slip stitch to the background square. The design is completed by hand-embroidering the antenna with chain stitch, following the guidelines on the template provided.
Note: Check that the 1in (2.5cm) box on the template page is the right size before cutting out your fabrics (see Using Printed Patterns). If not, adjust your printer settings and print again until the sizing is correct. To trace the shape of the antennae, arrange the template under the fabric until the antennae are in position and then trace the lines using an erasable fabric marker. You can do this over a lightbox or holding the template and fabric up to a window.By making this block, you’ll have:
- Learnt English Paper Piecing.
- Hand appliquéd a shape to a background fabric.
- Found out how to create an accurate curved shape by gathering stitches around a card template.
- Learnt chain-stitch embroidery.
Unfinished block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
