Quilt-Along: Grazing Hexie Sheep Block of the Month 7 | 2026

It’s time to relax with some hand stitching while you make these cute English paper-pieced hexie sheep with embroidered faces – enjoy!

This fun block, depicting English-paper-pieced hexie sheep grazing in a field, is hand stitched and appliquéd. Felt ears and feet and hand-embroidered facial features (mainly French knots) bring the sheep to life.

You’ll need a little additional white fabric and black felt from your scrap stash for this block.

Tips

  1. If you’re using fine thread to join your hexies, knot this around the needle eye, otherwise the needle will constantly become unthreaded (the needle will still go smoothly through the fabric).
  2. I have listed fabric strips in the materials list from which you can cut your hexies, but if you can cut your hexies from small fabric scraps, then go ahead.

By making this block, you'll have:

  1. Sewn English Paper Pieced (EPP) Hexagons
  2. Worked hand appliqué
  3. Learnt or practised French knot embroidery

Unfinished block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
