Quilt-Along: Honey Bee Block of the Month 1 | 2026
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Combining some light patchwork with a little appliqué, this is a lovely block. At 12in (30.5cm) finished size, it could easily be used for other projects too.
This pretty pieced and appliquéd block depicts bees buzzing around the hive (centre 9-patch square). We’re starting with this block, not only because the piecing and appliqué are fairly straightforward, but because it will give you confidence to move on to one or two more challenging blocks during the course of the year!
If you have one, try using an open-toed foot for the appliqué: it will enable you to follow the outline of the shapes more easily.
By making this block, you’ll learn:
- How to make a nine-patch block.
- How to assemble quilt blocks by joining pieces into rows and rows into blocks.
- Some simple machine raw-edge appliqué using adhesive fabric sheet – we chose blanket stitch.
Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.
Unfinished block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
