These patchwork dogs are so cute that dog lovers are going to want to feature them on other projects in the home. There’s no template this time – this block is pure patchwork.
This block is repeated twice: in the lower right (Block 8) and top left (Block 13). The block itself is made up of two dog units, facing in opposite directions. Although it’s not the fastest block to create, after making the initial unit, you will become quicker!
We’ve introduced the split quarter square triangle in this block – it forms part of the bow.Each dog is assembled in two units first which are then joined together. We’ll make the two dogs, facing in opposite directions, then join these and add a background strip to each side to complete the block.
Precise cutting is required for this block as several of the cuts involve eighths of an inch (3mm).
By making this block, you'll have:
- Created two-in-one-go half square triangles (HSTs).
- Created split quarter square triangles.
- Cut to 1/8in (3mm).
Tip
When stitching along the diagonal line, position your needle a couple of thread widths inside the seam allowance and stitch. Before cutting off the diagonal seam allowance, flip the fabric towards the corner and press away from the seam, matching the corner edges to the underneath fabric(s), then trim the seam allowance. This will help retain the required size and shape. Make more puppy dogsOne dog unit (as shown in step 10) is 6½in (16.5cm) square unfinished – when sewn into a patchwork the finished unit will be 6in (15.5cm) square. It’s perfect for any project where you’re looking for a smallish block.
Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance. Because this block uses a lot of pieces, for greatest accuracy we suggest you use the imperial measurements (inches) if you can.

- Sewing thread in a matching or neutral colour

Fabrics (see my Introduction to Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:
- Two 1⅝in (4cm) squares in each of Fab B and Fab D for Block 8 and in Fab A and Fab C for Block 13
- One 1⅝ x 2¾in (4 x 7cm) rectangle in each of Fab B and Fab D for Block 8 and in Fab A and Fab C for Block 13
- One 2⅛in (5.5cm) square in each of Fab B and Fab D for Block 8 and in Fab A and Fab C for Block 13
- Two 1⅝in x 1¾in (4 x 4.5cm) rectangles in each of Fab B and Fab D for Block 8 and in Fab A and Fab C for Block 13
- One 4¼ x 3in (10.75 x 7.5cm) rectangle in each of Fab B and Fab D for Block 8 and in Fab A and Fab C for Block 13
- Four 1⅝in (4cm) squares in Fab G (two for each block)
- Four 1⅝in (4cm) squares in Fab I (two for each block)
- Four 1⅝ x 2¾in (4 x 7cm) rectangles in B/G (two for each block)
- Four 1⅝in (4cm) squares in B/G (two for each block)
- Four 2⅛in (5.5cm) squares in B/G (two for each block)
- Four 2¾ x 3⅛in (7 x 8cm) rectangles in B/G (two for each block)
- Four 4¼ x 2¾in (10.75 x 7cm) strips in B/G (two for each block)
- Four 2 x 1¾in (5 x 4.5cm) rectangles in B/G (two for each block)
- Four 1½ x 12½in (3.75 x 31.75cm) strips in B/G (two for each block) – these are the side borders
