Slow Sunday Sandals | Guest Designer Diana Li Fitzgerald

Diana Li Fitzgerald’s sashiko sandals will be your new go-to for relaxed days at home.

House shoes? More like house heroes! These sandals from Patchwork Sashiko author Diana Li Fitzgerald turn lounging into a statement. The top is covered in tiny, stitched-together scraps of fabric, so you can transform those scraps in your sewing room into something you'll wear every day.

Diana shares: "We don’t wear shoes inside the house, so there are a variety of indoor sandals and slippers strategically placed around the home. This playful, patterned pair is a favourite!"

Quick Patchwork Sashiko for Sandals

  • Layer your scraps: Arrange small fabric squares or rectangles (about 1½˝ or 4cm) on a muslin base, leaving raw edges visible and overlapping pieces slightly.
  • Baste (tack) in place: Use a long, loose stitch by hand or machine to hold pieces securely.
  • Stitch the texture: Sew parallel rows of uniform running stitches in white thread across the patchwork to bind all layers.
  • Finish: Trim edges if needed, and fuse lightweight interfacing to the back for stability.
  • This creates a durable, flexible patchwork perfect for your sandal straps.
  • Purchase Patchwork Sashiko for more brilliant tips on how to master this scrap-busting method. You can also get 30% off Diana’s book with your member discount. Simply add Patchwork Sashiko to your basket and apply the code at the check-out stage.

    Preparing your templates

Prepare the templates by printing them, and then cutting them out of the paper. Template 2 includes US women’s sizes 6-14 (UK women's sizes 4-12) and US men’s sizes 4.5-12.5 (UK men's sizes 3.5 to 11.5). Trace both A pieces (mirrored) onto the patchwork sashiko textile before cutting either out to make sure they both fit.

    • A: Cut 2 Template 1 (mirrored) from the patchwork sashiko textile
    • B: Cut 2 Template 2 (mirrored) from the bottom fabric
    • C: Cut 2 Template 1 (mirrored) from the lining fabric
    • D: Cut 2 Template 2 (mirrored) from the sole fabric
    • E: Cut 2 Template 1 (mirrored) from the Bosal foam
    • F: Cut 2 Template 2 (mirrored) from the Bosal foam
    • G: Cut 2 Template 2 from the Peltex
    • Make your own bias binding

Cut two strips 2¼˝-wide (5.5cm) diagonally across the fabric. Trim the strip ends straight. You can reserve the extra for another use.
