Stylish and practical, these storage pods will help keep your home tidy. They’re quick and easy to make, which is lucky because everyone’s going to want one!
These handy storage pods are a great way to keep your craft room neat and organized. Hang them on pegs, hooks or the back of a door to store sewing supplies, craft tools and other essentials. They're also perfect for organizing toys in a child's bedroom or toiletries in the bathroom.
Fabric choicesI've used Panama canvas for both the outer and lining to give the pods plenty of structure, but any medium-weight woven cotton fabric will work just as well, including denim. Note that the gusset is cut in one piece, so it works best with a non-directional fabric. If you are keen to use a fabric with an obvious direction, you can cut two half gusset pieces and join them along the ‘Place on fold’ edge of the pattern piece, remembering to add a seam allowance to this edge. I've used craft fleece to add structure to the pods without bulk. Foam stabilizer would also work well. If you use a standard wadding/fleece, your pod will have a softer form, but that’s fine too.
Make it your own!
- Make a patchwork front. This not only looks good but is an opportunity to use up fabric scraps or even do some upcycling – see the Patchwork Denim Hobo Bag for inspiration.
- Add initials! These pods can help children learn to put things away if you make one for each child, especially if you appliqué their initials onto the front of their pods.
- Add other appliqué or embroidery to the front such as one of the Aida and Pearl embroidery designs (see the Tablet and Notebook Case + Four Bonus Embroidery Templates).
By the end of this project, you’ll have:
- Made simple lined storage pods.
- Learned how to use binding to make a hanging loop.
- Inserted a shaped gusset.
- Potentially used up some of your stash.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine with a standard foot
- Fabric scissors
- Fabric clips
- Optional: pins
- Optional: erasable fabric marker
Materials
- 36 x 14in (91.5 x 35.5cm) of medium-weight fabric for the front and back – I chose a firm fabric with a nautical design
- 44 x 31in (112 x 79cm) of contrast fabric for the gusset and lining – I chose a striped fabric
- 39 x 22in (99 x 56cm) of fusible craft fleece
- 56in (142cm) of ¾in (2cm) wide bias binding – you can use ready-made binding or make it from scratch (see Bias Binding in the Tips & Techniques section)
