This latest addition to the popular Wonky Street collection features a row of shops on the centre panel, trimmed with smart binding and edged with a gingham border.
This cushion cover features a charming appliqué design, creating a playful scene across the centre of the cushion. The appliqué is made from carefully cut fabric shapes forming colourful little shopfronts, each with its own doors, windows and decorative details. Feel free to add more of your own! Different prints and colours give each shop character, making the design feel lively and handmade. I’ve chosen pastel colours on a natural linen background, but bright colours would be fun for summer.
The beauty of Wonky lies in the name: if your appliqué pieces aren’t cut perfectly and your stitches aren’t straight, all the better! That’s what Wonky is all about, making this a perfect project for anyone new to free-motion embroidery.Make it your own!
- Personalize the stores – perhaps you’d like one to be a bookshop, a florist’s shop, a barber’s or an ice-cream seller. Simply change the window decorations accordingly.
- If you love embroidery, show off your hand stitching by embroidering on more flowers – you could even add a climbing plant to one of the house fronts.
- Take a look at the other Wonky Street projects and ‘borrow’ some of the templates from those projects.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine with a standard and free-motion embroidery/darning foot
- Permanent marker pen for tracing the shapes
- Heat-erasable pen to mark in additional sewing lines
- Scissors
- Fabric clips or pins
- Optional: appliqué mat
- Optional: tweezers to help you remove the paper backing from the fusible webbing
- Optional: basting spray
- Optional: 1in (2.5cm) bias binding maker
Materials
- 6 x 46in (15 x 117cm) of fusible webbing such as Bondaweb or Heat N Bond: since there are lots of small pieces to cut, you can make use of any leftover pieces you already have
- 13in (33cm) square of fabric for the appliqué background: I’ve used plain caramel ramie linen
- Fabric scraps for the appliqué, including white for the windows
- 44 x 39in (112 x 100cm) of fabric for the border and cushion back: I chose a pretty pink gingham
- 44 x 10in (112 x 25cm) of fabric for the binding: mine is green (or you could use ready-made binding)
- Pink, green and yellow embroidery thread – or choose other colours to go with your fabric choices
- Thread for the appliqué stitching: I used a caramel-coloured thread because I felt that it suited my colour scheme well and so the stitches don’t stand out too much
- 18in (46in) square of wadding: I used polyester wadding but you can omit this if you wish, although I think it adds a luxurious feel
- 18in (46cm) square of lining fabric: this won’t be seen so I’ve used white cotton
- 18in (46cm) square cushion pad (this is bigger than the cushion cover so the finished cushion is nicely firm)
