Double Hem | Jenniffer Taylor | Photo Tutorial

Learn how to master a double hem and give your finished skirt a neat result.

A double folded hem is an enclosed seam – the raw edges are concealed, giving you a neat finish. How deep you have the hem will depend on the shape of the hemline. If your skirt has a relatively straight or flat hem then a deep hem can be used. If the hem is curved, a narrow hem will be required otherwise unwanted folds and pleats will occur in the fabric. Before you even cut out your fabric, make sure you add enough hem allowance to the hemline of your skirt pattern. It needs to be twice the depth you want, as you will be turning it back on itself twice.

This tutorial has been extracted from Your Skirt, Your Way by Jenniffer Taylor. In this title, Jenniffer will show you how to design and sew your own gorgeous, unique skirts, with no need for shop-bought patterns. Start by creating your own block and toile using just four body measurements. Then select your skirt shape, add the fittings, fastenings and details you want, and put the whole thing together with ease.
