Highland cow block. Instructions say unfinished block size is 12.5" square. However the background fabric for this block is stated as 12.5" x 11". Please can someone let me know which is the correct size. I don't want to iron in place and then realise my block size is wrong. Thank you.

Ah that makes sense. Thank you Laura.

I have been using the 1/4 inch mark on my sewing machine to make sure I am accurate during piecing; however, it seems my square is not about 12 in square unfinished instead of 12 1/2 in square. I had even put tape down on my machine to ensure I was accurate. Any advice how I can improve my piecing when sewing the seam allowance?
Laura replied: 13 Apr 26 at 17:10
Sometimes a scant 1/4” seam allowance is good for piecing as the fabric and the thread thickness can affect the finished size when factored into the seam. Perhaps make up a block using scraps to see what measuring/tool method gives you the closest to the 12 1/2” block and make a note of how you achieved that so that you can use that method in the future. Some modern machines also have a 1/4” seam allowance as a stitch choice ..this will move your needle to the 1/4” position to your standard machine foot so that is worth trying too. A good tip is keep consistent when piecing so when you choose a technique/way to measure your seam allowance to make your pieces then use that technique throughout your project.

Could someone tell me if Debbie sells the zipper clasps you use when you have to cut the zipper? Thank you
Laura replied: 10 Apr 26 at 09:00
Do you mean the zip ends that you put on to join the ends and then screw in place. I don’t think Debbie has those in stock. Lisa Lam brings them to Sewing Street sometimes so you could try there or on Lisa Lams website.

In Debbie's Sew a Large Tote I followed instructions carefully but ended up with very baggy lining. What am I doing wrong? I haven't seen that anyone else has experienced this problem. I've undone this bag after completing it and tried making wider seams to bring the lining down in size. I am feeling very disappointed about it being such a failure lining wise. I did think when I read the instructions the main bag and lining were the same size, that the lining may be saggy. Please can anyone help me to make a non-sagging lining.
Laura replied: 3 Apr 26 at 09:57
Yes this can happen ..in some videos Debbie suggests keeping to the stated seam allowance at the top of the bag for the outer and lining as these should be equal width. When you are sewing the lining taper the seam allowance slightly so that the seam is wider when you get to the base and repeat this on the other side and match the wider seam allowance on the bottom seam so that your corners are equal when you come to sewing across them. Make a note of the seam allowance that gives you the look you like on the pattern so that you remember next time you make it. On smaller bags I interface the lining with a light interface (H200) which gives them a firmer look and they don’t appear baggy. Hope this helps a little.
